Germany 1-1 Italy
Bayern pair Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller linked up in the 16th minute as the former slotted home to give Germany the lead in Dortmund. But the Germans were denied victory in a rematch of the 2006 WC semi-final by a late Giuseppe Rossi strike. It was Klose’s 59th international goal in 106 appearances.
The Dortmund trio of Kevin Grosskreutz, Mats Hummels and Mario Goetze all made second half appearances at their home ground, but Sven Bender was left disappointed as an unused substitute on his first call up to the senior side.
Poland 1-0 Norway
Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski scored the only goal of a game played in Portugal and dominated by Norway. The Pole netted his 11th international goal in the 19th minute from the edge of the area.
Croatia 4-2 Czech Republic
‘Lautern’s Ivo Iličević scored his first goal for Croatia with a long-range ping in only his 3rd appearance for the senior side.
Azerbaijan 0-2 Hungary
Stuutgart loanee (parent: Borussia Dortmund) Tamas Hajnal scored his country’s second goal in Baku.
Netherlands 3-1 Austria
Two Bundesliga stars got on the score sheet in Eindhoven as Het Oranje strolled to victory. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke 04) netted Netherlands’ second goal and Marko Arnautovic (Werder Bremen) bagged a consolation late on from the spot for the travelling Austrians.
