Judgement Day: relegation battle as it happened

14 May

After 33 matchdays in which Dortmund dominated, Mainz and Hannover impressed and Bayern flattered to deceive we have reached the final weekend. Only formalities at the top remain but we still have a three way battle between Wolfsburg, ‘Gladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt to come.

Remember in this mini-league, top means safety, second the play-offs and last the second tier…

Here we go:

12 mins: Kuba fouled in the box but Barrios’ penalty is brilliantly saved by Ralf Fährmann. [Dortmund 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt]

  • Wolfsburg – 36 pts (- 7)
  • Borussia M’gladbach – 36 pts (-17)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

25 mins: Elia goal disallowed as Ben Hatira commits a foul off the ball. [HSV 0-0 Gladbach]

29 mins: Grafite goes through on goal but his rather weak attempt is saved by Starke in the Hoffenheim goal. [Hoffenheim 0-0 Wolfsburg]

37 mins: Lewandowski goes through one-on-one with Fährmann but the goalkeeper stands up well and the Pole sends the rebound wide. [Dortmund 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt]

41 mins:  GOAL: Arango’s stunning free kick from at least 30 yards beats Rost to lift Gladbach up to 15th. [HSV 0-1 Gladbach]

  • Borussia M’gladbach – 38 pts (-16)
  • Wolfsburg – 36 pts (- 7)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

43 mins: Long range effort from Caio almost sneaks in but Roman Weidenfeller gets down well and pushes the ball round the post for a corner. [Dortmund 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt]

45 mins: Gekas gets onto the end of a long ball but his stretching effort is just about tipped onto the bar by Weidenfeller. [Dortmund 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt]

Half TimeHSV 0-1 Gladbach, Hoffenheim 0-0 Wolfsburg, Dortmund 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt

Things relatively quiet so far. Gladbach lead in Hamburg thanks to a beautiful curling free kick from Juan Arango but the others remain nervy 0-0s.

  • Borussia M’gladbach – 38 pts (-16)
  • Wolfsburg – 36 pts (- 7)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

49 mins: GOAL: 1-0 Firmino latches onto a through ball and slides the ball past Benaglio… Felix Magath scratches his head on the touchline. I’d imagine he’s sweating a tad. [Hoffenheim 1-0 Wolfsburg]

  • Borussia M’gladbach – 38 pts (-16)
  • Wolfsburg – 35 pts (- 8)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

46 mins: GOAL: Now Magath will really be sweating. Gekas reaches what looks like an overhit free-kick and plays it square inside the six yard box for Sebastian Rode to nod in. [Dortmund 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt]

  • Borussia M’gladbach – 38 pts (-16)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 37 pts (-15)
  • Wolfsburg – 35 pts (- 8)

60 mins: GOAL: Mandzukic with a classy finish over Starke to equalise for Wolfsburg. They still need a goal as things stand. Two years ago they were Champions. 5 weeks ago, Gladbach were dead and buried. How things change. [Hoffenheim 1-1 Wolfsburg]

  • Borussia M’gladbach – 38 pts (-16)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 37 pts (-15)
  • Wolfsburg – 36 pts (- 7)

65 mins: Gladbach still lead in Hamburg but Lucien Favre is getting twitchy. [HSV 0-1 Gladbach]

68 mins: GOAL: Piszczek with some fantastic work on the right, culminating with a lovely backheel for Barrios to convert from 8 yards. Eintracht in trouble again. Wolfsburg happier. [Dortmund 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt]

  • Borussia M’gladbach – 38 pts (-16)
  • Wolfsburg – 36 pts (- 7)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

71 mins: GOAL: Told you Favre was getting twitchy… Just realised how stupid that sounds when this isn’t a live feed. You’ll have to trust me. Ben Hatira stabs in after a bit of a scramble involving Dante and Van Nistelrooy. Only the 9th goal they’ve conceded in 12 games under Favre. Wolfsburg happier still. [HSV 1-1 Gladbach]

  • Wolfsburg – 36 pts (- 7)
  • Borussia M’gladbach – 36 pts (-17)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

74 mins: GOAL: Mario Mandzukic has turned the game in Hoffenheim on its head. He’s buried a header from a corner to give Magath’s side the lead. This score is good enough for Wolfsburg no matter what happens anywhere else. [Hoffenheim 1-2 Wolfsburg]

  • Wolfsburg – 38 pts (- 6)
  • Borussia M’gladbach – 36 pts (-17)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 35 pts (-16)

72 mins: GOAL: Dortmund have turned it round too as Lewandowski bundles in after Fährmann saved well from Barrios. Frankfurt wanted a penalty for handball on Hummels just 30 seconds before, but you can’t give penalties for them. Here comes Dedê.  [Dortmund 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt]

  • Wolfsburg – 38 pts (- 6)
  • Borussia M’gladbach – 36 pts (-17)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 34 pts (-17)

78 mins: GOAL: 3-1 Wolfsburg surely now safe as Grafite deflects in Sascha Riethers shot. When your luck’s in… [Hoffenheim 1-3 Wolfsburg]

  • Wolfsburg – 38 pts (- 5)
  • Borussia M’gladbach – 36 pts (-17)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 34 pts (-17)

81 mins: Schmelzer bursts through and is brought down for a penalty. The culprit, Titsch-Rivero, had been on the pitch 34 seconds. Dedê is given the chance to put a cherry on the top of his Dortmund cake… but Fährmann saves again! Unbelievable. If they get out of this, I guess he’ll be owed a fair bonus. [Dortmund 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt]

FT: Hoffenheim 1-3 Wolfsburg

FT: HSV 1-1 Gladbach

90 mins: GOAL: Barrios scores his second with a close range header. Such a contrast of emotions at the Westfalen. [Dortmund 3-1 Eintracht Frankfurt]

  • Wolfsburg – 38 pts (- 5)
  • Borussia M’gladbach – 36 pts (-17)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – 34 pts (-17)

FT: Dortmund 3-1 Eintracht Frankfurt [Frankfurt Relegated]

Wow. What an afternoon. Eintracht Frankfurt join St. Pauli in the 2nd tier, and Gladbach will play off against either Bochum or Greuther Fürth for the right to stay up. Stunning achievement for die Fohlen considering they have faced Bayern, local rivals Köln, Mainz, Dortmund, Hannover, Freiburg and Hamburg over the past seven weeks.

Felix Magath has somehow negotiated safety for Wolfsburg but at one point they looked for all the world to be gone. Write him off at your peril.

Now you can relive all the drama here, here and here
